New Whiskey Watch: Old Forester Kentucky Straight Rye

Brown-Forman (Old Forester's parent company) recently submitted a label for a new Old Forester Kentucky straight rye whiskey to the TTB for approval (see the image above, taken straight from the TTB website).  Remember, just because a label is submitted to the TTB for approval, there is no guarantee that the whiskey will be released, although it seems highly likely that we will see this whiskey on shelves by early 2019 at the very latest.

This 100 proof straight rye would be the first rye whiskey in the Old Forester whiskey line up.  The mash bill would contain 65% rye grain, and is displayed on the back label.  This would be a step away from most Kentucky-made rye whiskeys, which usually hover around the minimum allowed proportion of rye grain in the mash at 51-55% rye.

My conjecture is that this whiskey will be priced to compete with mid-shelf rye whiskeys like Rittenhouse, Wild Turkey 101 rye, Knob Creek rye, Dickel, and Bulliet.
